Wednesday 31st January to Monday 1st April 2024

Where did those 2 months go?! Well…

Keeping to the usual pattern, health first, my last consultation was on 13th March. It was probably our quickest phone call ever, the consultant even admitted to feelings of guilt over how short our conversations are, but we agreed that it’s better that way than the reverse. Everything remains stable and we continue as before, for now. Another 8 weeks prescription.

February was a bitty month. I had a sight test – first time for about 5 years, and learnt that my eyes have improved slightly for distance and worsened slightly for close vision. No need to change glasses, though. I did a couple of drives out with friends, the Mazda had its MOT, after which it needed new rear brake pads as they were binding, and I continued to work at the railway, building our new ticket office, which is very close to ready for its roof.

The main event of the month was the addition of Bronson to our family!

He’s a young male tabby cat, rescued by the RSPCA in Berkshire, and he’s proving to be a fun-loving and mischievous individual. He’s a bit wary of people but gradually adapting to us, and when he’s in the mood, great company and very entertaining. He’s recently been allowed outside and spends varying amounts of time exploring the garden and adjacent areas, getting accustomed to his surroundings.

March was quieter, apart from the customary weekend in the middle spent exploring the roads of Wales with a small group of friends. This year we had a taciturn Scotsman and a very talkative Welshman – they almost cancelled each other out 😀 We all had a great time. Thanks as always to GB for organising.

I had a couple of other drives out, formal and informal, and enjoyable for different reasons. We also had the third meeting of the local beer tasting panel – learning more about the flavours to try and identify, and how to start scoring those aspects. Alex Arkell at Arkell’s brewery hosted us in their historic brewery bar – cold but very interesting.

Indulging a whim I’ve harboured for some time, I popped out one Friday evening and came home with a little wood turning lathe. It was very cheap, and will enable me to see if I have the talent or the inclination to turn it into a hobby. So far I’ve made a saucepan lid knob! 🙂

Here it is in the garage, still sitting the wrong way round on its bench, but you get the idea. If you’re interested, it’s a Coronet Minor, probably from the 1950s or 60s, with a later replacement motor.

Easter came, and although the weather was fine and the hot cross buns very enjoyable, I wasn’t able to take advantage, having succumbed to an awful cough and a high temperature last Tuesday, so it was a quieter than normal weekend.

That’s it for now. Happy Easter, folks!
